Parent and child reviewing a tablet

Choose a calm moment

A digital check-in works better as a routine conversation than as a reaction to something going wrong. Invite everyone to talk about the apps they use and what they find helpful, confusing, or uncomfortable.

Agree on a few boundaries

Discuss what stays private, what to do with an unexpected message, and when to ask an adult for help. Adapt the discussion to age and needs. Keep the agreement simple enough to remember.

Review settings together

Look at built-in privacy and family controls together. Explain which settings are enabled and why. Settings can support a family agreement, but they cannot guarantee that unwanted content or contact will never appear.

Leave the door open

Make it clear that asking for help will not automatically lead to blame. Revisit the plan as devices, apps, and responsibilities change.
