A laptop in a home workspace

Start with what you use

Write down the devices you use regularly, including an older tablet or a shared laptop. Note which ones hold important files. This gives you a manageable list rather than a vague task to make everything safer.

Make updates a routine

Use the update controls built into your device. Turn on automatic updates where appropriate and set aside time to restart. If a device no longer receives updates, check the manufacturer’s advice before continuing to use it for sensitive tasks.

Check your backups

Choose a backup location that fits your needs. Keep access to it separate from your everyday device where possible, and try restoring a non-sensitive sample file. Having a backup and knowing it works are different things.

Review access

Remove apps and browser extensions you no longer use. Review permissions for location, camera, and microphone. Change one setting at a time so you can understand its effect.
